A rise in overseas employment opportunities has led to more young candidates opting for working holidays abroad. Destinations including Australia and Canada are increasingly turning to British backpackers, career breakers and gap year students to fill vacancies in the hospitality and leisure industries. Teaching, customer service and intern roles are particularly common, as are bar and restaurant workers, summer camp counselors and ski resort staff.
Generally, students from countries within the European Union (EU) and North America (Canada & USA) encounter a few problems when seeking work visas for these working holiday opportunities. However, with strict immigration laws in the majority of non-EU countries, work permits can be a challenge to obtain for non-students.
