Most travel enthusiasts have a bucket list of places they need to see before they die. Hardcore enthusiasts may even have multiple lists, broken down by continent, attraction, beaches or even cities.
If you crave the city experience over the more rural and offbeat locales, you’re going to want to read this list. Here are five cities you have to visit as soon as possible.
Seville, Spain
Located in the Southern region of Spain, Seville is best known for its architecture, baroque artwork, and shift toward non-motorized transportation. Seville was just listed as Lonely Planet’s top city to visit in 2018 as it will be celebrating the 400th anniversary of their native artist, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo in addition to being a Game of Thrones filming location.
What to See
While in Seville, you’ll definitely want to take in the Real Alcázar, a fort which is over 1,000 years old. For a more modern spin, visit the Metropol Parasol. This mushroom-like structure was built in 2011 as a sunshade and offers amazing views of the city.
New York City, United States of America
Also known as the Big Apple and the City that Never Sleeps, New York City is an American icon. People worldwide recognize the yellow cabs and the hustle and bustle from countless television shows and movies. It is a place that truly has something for everyone, and is the epitome of a metropolis.
What to See
While you are planning your city tours, you’ll want to consider the top tourist destinations, like the Empire State Building, Times Square, and the Statue of Liberty. However, New York City is filled with hidden gems that will appeal to your inner artist, athlete or wine connoisseur. No matter how offbeat your interests, you’re sure to find something in the streets of Gotham.
San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
Mexico isn’t all about the white sand beaches and margaritas (though you should certainly enjoy the latter no matter which part of the country you visit). San Miguel de Allende is a colonial settlement located north of Mexico City. With stunning architecture and interesting boutiques, San Miguel de Allende is the perfect place to experience Mexican history and culture.
What to See
Be sure to visit the iconic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, a stunning pink church. Stop by local restaurants to try authentic Mexican moles and gorditas. If possible, spend a night in Hotel Matilda and lounge in the courtyard infinity pool.
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Located in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai offers a glorious balance of old and new. With gorgeous temples and festive night markets, Chiang Mai is glamorous, fun, and majestic. With both budget and luxury options in hotels, restaurants, and experiences, Chiang Mai is the perfect destination for any price point.
What to See
Be sure to stop by the Baanchang Elephant Park to provide care and compassion to elephants. If you do nothing else on your trip, you must see the Doi Inthanon, a national park resting on a part of the Himalayas.
Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town is a coastal city, resting between the base of the Table Mountain National Park and the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Cape Town is the perfect destination for adventure enthusiasts, athletic travelers, and art and music lovers. Take a day trip through the mountains and find yourself in a lush, rural area with attractions of its own.
What to See
If you are a history buff, you’ll want to take a trip to the Robben Island Museum, where Nelson Mandela spent time in solitary confinement. You haven’t really seen Cape Town until you’ve viewed it from the top of Table Mountain. Watch the sunset from Clifton Beach, which is so beautiful you have to witness it to believe it can be so close to an urban area.
See It All
The world is full of fascinating cities, each with features that make them unique and desirable. Make your list, create a travel plan, and go see the incredible world around you.
